Chasing dreams is the second best thing in any journey, attaining this dream and turning it to reality remains the best achievement.
On June 26, 2023, the American University of Cyprus (AUCY) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to foster academic cooperation and establish dual degree programs at the postgraduate level. The momentous ceremony took place at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva.
Representing UNITAR during the ceremony were Mr. Nikhil Seth, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Director of the Institute, and Mr. Rabih El Haddad, Director of the Division for Multilateral Diplomacy. AUCY was represented by Dr. Marc-Antoine Zabbal, Rector of AUCY, and Dr. Tarek Sadek and Mr. Christos Karas, representing the Board of Trustees of AUCY.
The primary objective of the MOU is to develop and implement a dual degree program at the postgraduate level while organizing workshops and seminars focusing on leadership, diplomacy, public administration, conflict resolution, and international law.
As part of this collaboration, an official delegation from the United Nations, represented by UNITAR, will visit AUCY in October 2023 for a site visit and to commemorate the program’s launch. The event will be attended by Officials and Diplomats from the United Nations and Cyprus.
During his opening speech, Mr. Nikhil emphasized the importance of promoting peace and highlighted the role of the UN and UNITAR in integrating diplomacy and peace through education, which aligns with UNITAR’s core mission.
Dr. Zabbal underscored that Cyprus, being a country situated at the crossroads of the Middle East and Europe, faces numerous challenges that require constant efforts for sustainable peace in the region. He expressed that the aim of this cooperation is to promote diplomacy and peace through education.
