CERTIFICATION DESCRIPTION

Food styling is primarily a combination of art and science, including a blend of elegance, creativity, innovation, photography, videography, taste and preparation. The ultimate goal is to present the food in an appealing, fresh and tasty way. Food styling, even though done naturally with any food presentation is converted contemporarily to an art and science. This field is increasing in demand among restaurants, hotels, magazines, and publishers in their quest for a perfect plate. The person providing food styling services is defined as a food stylist. A Food stylist is responsible for making food appear as perfect as possible for further presentation and photographers shooting it, while converting the art into practice. Their job includes translating the perfect image into a stunning real-life capture while creating consistent look and feel throughout a tailored branding. Food stylists work both with photographers and art directors to coordinate amazing shots by plating meals and arranging food to look its best. Food stylists’ work can be featured in many places, such as cookbooks, movies and TV shows, commercials, magazines, promotional photos, and more.


The American University of Cyprus has initiated the first Academy of Food Styling and Culinary Arts in Cyprus with Accredited three levels program of Food Stylist, noted as Levels I, II, and III. These levels start with a beginner’s level where the basics of food styling in its different aspects is presented. The level I is followed by two more advanced levels and crowned by a level II advanced food stylist who can successfully manage his own firm of food styling. Social media emphasis forms an integral part of the three levels. 


In Level I food styling, the candidates focus on the importance of presenting visually appealing food. The candidates learn basic styling techniques and workflow. General knowledge of the food styling industry is also covered in this certification. Students are introduced to the theories behind common culinary practices. Basic industry terminology and concepts are discussed so that students gain a strong culinary foundation. This certificate gives insight into foods that usually photograph poorly, and gives tips and tricks to help students overcome the obstacles associated with these particular recipes. The candidates will be introduced to the nature of the food styling business as well as the theory behind it. This is accomplished through twelve modules specifically tailored for this purpose.


COURSE DURATION: A total of thirty-one (31) hours.
